Elon Musk called on Batman’s suit designer to fit NASA’s newest astronauts

Last month, NASA partnered with SpaceX to launch the first manned spacecraft from American soil since 2011. This marked NASA’s first use of a commercial transportation system, using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. But Elon Musk’s aerospace company didn’t just supply the payload; they supplied the style. Superhero style.

When eccentric billionaire Elon Musk needed a high-tech suit that could withstand the elements and (potentially) survive a battle against aliens, he did what fellow alien-battling eccentric billionaires Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark did: He called Jose Fernandez.

Fernandez is known in Hollywood circles as the guy who makes superheroes look good. He and his company Ironhead Studio built sleek suits for such blockbuster hits as Batman V Superman: Dawn of JusticeTronIronman 2The Amazing Spiderman, and Captain America: Civil War.

When he first got the call in 2016, Fernandez thought it was for another movie. “Then I realized it’s an actual space program,” he recalled. He only had time to build a helmet, but Musk loved it, and six months later they had a suit design.

The collaboration proved successful, and NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley donned the stylish suits for their journey to the International Space Station. As for whether the suits will survive a bout with a rogue Kryptonian, stay tuned.
